University of Münster, Germany (coordinating university)

Prof. Dr. Gabriele Schrüfer (official coordinator)

Prof. Dr. Gabriele Schrüfer is the official coordinator of the STAR IP. She is a full professor at the Institute of Geography Education at the University of Münster. She worked as a teacher for geography and economics at secondary schools for three years after her practical teacher training. In 2003, she was awarded her PhD for the doctoral dissertation on the topic “Understanding Foreign Cultures. Production and Evaluation of a Lesson Concept for the Sixth Form (German “Oberstufe”) Using the Example of Africa”. Since then, she has been engaged in the promotion of intercultural competencies. This includes opportunities and chances of intercultural learning during excursions and in geography lessons, changes of perspective and decision-making competence. For many years, she has been conducting research on “intercultural learning on field excursions” in Tanzania. Additionally, she focuses on education for sustainable development and the use of web 2.0 and tablets in geography classes.

Nina Brendel (deputy coordinator)

Nina Brendel is the deputy coordinator of the STAR IP. She worked as a teacher in secondary schools for two years, after having graduated in teacher training in Geography and German Language and Literature. Since March 2011, she has been a research associate at the Institute of Geography Education supervised by Prof. Dr. Gabriele Schrüfer. In her PhD thesis she focuses on reflective thinking of college students in the context of global learning/ESD. Together with Prof. Dr. Schrüfer she founded a research group on (collaborative) mobile learning and web 2.0 and its implementation in schools. Moreover, she runs and maintains the group’s Twitter account and research weblog and will be in charge of all STAR social media.

Prof. Dr. Tillmann Buttschardt

Tillmann Buttschardt is a professor at the Institute for Landscape Ecology focusing on applied landscape ecology / ecological planning since 2008. After having studied geoecology, he worked among other things as reviewer and as research associate. His doctoral thesis dealt with “Extensive Greenery of Roofs and Nature Conservation”. On behalf of the German Technical Cooperation he has done research on management of major conservation areas and conflicts with the local population in western Africa for several years. Also in western Africa, he furthermore implemented a research project on behalf of the German Bundestag (Office of Technology Assessment) dealing with internet communication with and in developing countries. The latter study focussed on primary and secondary schools.

In terms of research, his key areas are for example instruments of nature conservation, anthropogenic dominated systems, protection concepts of the European Union, intervention provisions and environmental impact assessment. The human-environment system always forms the centre of his attention. In theses, excursions and seminars, he has dealt with the topic “energy” for several years, so that he can contribute a major part of the academic expertise to the intensive programme.

PD Dr. Gesine Hellberg-Rode

Gesine Hellberg-Rode is a research associate and private lecturer at the Centre of Biology Education at the University of Münster. Following her graduation from teacher training in Biology, Arts and Educational Studies she received her PhD for her ecological study on the pollution of subalpine dwarf shrubs and was promoted to professor following a study on the practical implementation of environmental education. In teaching, she focuses on education for sustainable development, ecology and biology didactics for both primary and secondary schools. Her key areas in terms of research correspond to this, namely environmental education / education for sustainable development, the Agenda 21 as well as scientific literacy. Among other things, she designed a web-based learning environment on soils including numerous teaching material. In her projects, she also deals with extracurricular places of learning and changes in learning culture.

Dr. Armin Stein

Armin Stein started working on “Coordinating and Organisational Mechanisms of Virtual Collaboration in Open-Source Development Networks” already in his bachelor thesis. After having studied Information Systems specialising in economics and communication systems, he did his PhD on “Expansion of the Supply Chain Operations Reference Model – Requirements, Concepts and Tools”.  From 2006 until 2010, he was employed as a research associate at the Chair of Information Systems and Information Management. Since 2010, he is the general manager of the European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS) at the University of Münster.

Erciyes University, Turkey

Dr. Selahattin Aksit

Selahattin Aksit worked as Geography teacher for four years. He finished his PhD in 2004 and has worked as an assistant professor since 2004. He specialized in Physical Geography and Education for sustainability. He coordinated the work on “Climate Change Adaption in Seyhan River Basin” (2008-2011), established a volunteer network for the important plants areas in Turkey (2007-2009), worked on a project on environmental education in Aladaglar National Park in 2006 and is the project manager of the outdoor learning programme “Without Walls”, financed by TUBITAK.

Dr. Fisun Aksit

Fisun Aksit worked as a Geography teacher at a public school in Turkey from 1995 – 2004.  She finished her PhD on “Active Learning at Geography Education” in 2007. Since 2004, she has worked as a lecturer at the Erciyes University in Kayseri. Fisun Aksit specialized in Active Learning and Intercultural Education.

University of Balearic Islands

Miquel Oliver Troubat

Miquel Oliver is director of the Institute for Education Sciences and lecturer at the Educational Sciences Department. He is doctorate on Educational Sciences by the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). Additionally, he has joined the editorial departments of some national journals (“Diálogos”, “Còdol”) and of an international journal (“Nauczyciel i Szkota”). He is also director of two national journals ("Innovib. Recursos i recerca educativa de les Illes Balears" and "In. Revista electrònica d'Investigació i Innovació Educativa i Socioeducativa") and member of the Scientific Committee in an International Observatory about Teacher profession. In the past, he was Director of the Educational Services at the Palma de Mallorca City Council, Director of the Municipal Education Council in the same city and Director of the Catalan Recycling Pan for the non-university lecturers on the Balearic Islands. He has been the Headmaster of Pedagogical Studies and he is co-directing the master in Cultural Management from the Universities of  UOC-UdG-UIB, as well as other postgraduate studies of school management and formation. Miquel Oliver has organized and held several courses of international teacher trainings: Active Citizenship, Sustainable Development and Cultural Diversity held in Lisbon (2002) and Mallorca (2003). He has also been a visiting lecturer in Górnoslaska Wyzsza Szkola Pedagogiczna de Polònia (2008-2010). In terms of research, he has participated in several projects on the local, national and international scale related to Formation and Work and Environmental Education. He has broad experience in the field of teacher training and is specialised in the analysis of teaching needs, which also was the topic of his doctoral thesis, and on didactic subjects, educational planning and environmental education. He is the author of several books and articles on teachers’ formation, educational management, didactics and some textbooks on teaching a language and environmental knowledge.

Roser Badia

Roser Badia graduated in Environmental Science at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and holds a master’s degree in Environmental Education. She works in environmental education research as a student of the Doctorate in Environmental Education and is also involved in a research group about ecoliteracy with other teachers from her university and from several schools. Roser Badia is also a member of a research group concerned with complex thinking at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She works at the UIB as an associate lecturer of Ecological Pedagogy, and she has a profound knowledge of schools due to her experience in carrying out environmental education activities with them through different projects in which they have been involved.

Olaya Álvarez

Olaya Álvarez graduated in Environmental Science at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). She is a PhD student in Environmental Education, researching about teacher training in environmental education and sustainability. She works at the UIB as an associate lecturer of Ecological Pedagogy and is involved in a research group about education and citizenship. She has been researching into two research lines: education for sustainability and social uses of internet. She has work experience in environmental education activities and programs in formal and non-formal contexts.
